"Furry Big Sister"

 The Final Chapter

In memory of Bella

We walked the morning after,

in the cool autumn air.

You would have absolutely loved it,

…had you been there.

But the night before, it whispered,

and said you couldn’t stay.

It told you not to worry,

that one day we’d be okay.

It told you that we’d miss you,

and we’d never be the same.

That you imprinted deep within us,

from the moment that you came.

Its quiet fingers stroked you,

near where I placed my head,

laying on the hardwood,

that your paws no longer tread.

And though you asked for longer,

to ensure that we would fare.

The peaceful dark assured you,

you had taken such good care.

But perhaps just one more day you think,

To lick every salty tear.

But again, it only muttered,

it was time to rest, my dear.

So we went for one last drive together,

before I tucked you into bed.

I rolled down your favourite window,

but you couldn’t lift your head.

In starlight it appeared for you,

at midnight, our goodbyes.

Our faces nose-to-nose,

until you gently closed your eyes.

The house has never felt more empty.

Silence, heavy on our chests.

Your echo so resounding,

knowing we were truly blessed.

Your bed lays vacant in the bedroom,

and it serves as a reminder.

Your little sister wipes our tears,

says, “Don’t be sad, I’ll find her.”

But we know where you’ll always be,

Never far apart.

Always in our memories

and forever in our heart.
